This year is the 30th anniversary of the opening of Elliot Lake’s Women’s Shelter, now called MapleGate House for Women. 30 for 30 is an innovative pilot programme to support women who have experienced domestic violence.

Welcome
We have a new name and look! Although the Elliot Lake Women’s Group Inc. will remain as our organization's charitable umbrella, the group of the programs and services that we offer to women and community members now falls under the MapleGate brand. Also, the shelter will be called the MapleGate House for Women as it too stems from the MapleGate brand.
We unveiled and launched these changes as a special feature during the 2007 International Women's Day event in Elliot Lake.
The reasoning behind the changes was to better reflect our agency's role in providing services to abused women. Our new look is also more conducive to increased community awareness and involvement.

Maple leaves are recognized as a symbol of change and transition. They are also images that are reflective of Canada and the north. The open ended circle invites community involvement in our efforts and initiatives to raise awareness about violence against women. The reference to "gate" connotes protection and freedom; a gate can close to protect those behind it and it can open to let those who stand behind walk freely.
The MapleGate is a safe place for women and children who are fleeing an abusive living situation. MapleGate staff are dedicated to helping clients through prevention, protection and partnership.
